We are going for a walk. Just a normal walk, down the street. We are leaving now, through the garden. I have the dog on lead in one hand and am reaching for Wren’s hand with the other.
Me: Wren, come this way, we’ll go through the side gate, not the front.
Wren: Why we are going not through the front gate?
Me: ‘Cause the postman touches…the postman comes through that gate.
Wren: Where’s the postman?
Me: Not now.
Wren: When?
Me: Later, maybe.
Wren: Why we are going not through the postman gate?
Me: Oh, I don’t know, just ‘cause.
Wren: ‘Cause it’s a busy gate.
Me: Yeah, a busy gate.
Wren: Why we crossing the road, Mama?
Me: To get to the other side.
Wren: No! Why?
Me: Oh, I don’t know, just ‘cause.
Wren: ‘Cause a dog is coming.
Me: Yeah, a dog is coming.
Wren: But Cherry likes dogs. She wants to say hello. Maybe that lady wants to say hello to Cherry, too.
Me: Well, maybe but –
Wren: Maybe that dog and that lady are tired and want to get home to bed.
Me: Probably.
Wren: Why we crossing back again now?
Me: Oh, I don’t know.
Wren: ‘Cause the dog is gone past.
Me: Yeah, that’s right, the dog has gone past.
Wren: Why we goin’ in the road not the pavement for this bit?
Me: Oh, I don’t know.
Wren: ‘Cause no car comin’.
Me: Yes, maybe, ‘cause no car comin’. But you know not to go in the road normally, right? It is not safe.
Wren: Why we goin’ in the road now?
Me: Oh, because….
Wren: Mama is with me.
Me: Yes, that’s right, Mama is with you.
Wren: Mama, why we not push the light?
Me: We won’t push the light today.
Wren: Why?
Me: We’ll just wait for the light to turn green for us.
Wren: Why?
Me: Oh, I don’t know, just ‘cause.
Wren: ‘Cause the light is broken.
Me: Yeah, that’s right, the light is broken today. It might be broken for some time yet.
Wren: Why?
Me: Oh, I wonder.
Wren: ‘Cause too busy, too many people pushed the light.
Me: Yeah, too many people push….Too many people, Wren. Too many people, my love. You’re right. You’re always right.
