My shop
I have an ice-cream shop. I sell ice-cream cones for £1. An extra scoop costs £0.50. Toppings cost £0.25. Please come to my shop!
You buy 1 cone with 1 extra scoop and 1 topping. You give me £2.00. How much change do I owe you?
You buy 3 cones and one topping on each cone. You pay me £5.00. How much change do I give you?
I am in Italy, with my extended family….so my shop is –
La Mia Gelateria!
(Below is translated from the Italian for British tourists).
My shop is in the winding back lanes of Perugia. It is summer and hot. Everyone is out on passeggiata, looking for gelato (this is currently against the law, but never mind, it’s just a story). You are with your beautiful extended family, kissing everyone three times in greetings, your aunt, her husband, their baby, his mother, his father, their neighbour, two of his B&B guests and the two farm dogs, Masha and Eddie. You buy a cone for each of your party (including yourself) and a topping each for the dogs (they don’t like ice cream but they have a hankering for hundreds and thousands, not that a proper gelateria would EVER sell hundreds and thousands, but never mind, it’s just a story.)
You give me £10.00 (it would, of course, be Euros, but never mind, it’s just a story). How much change do I give you?
Iris: Maaaamaaa! That is much too difficult!
Me: Okay, okay, but how many kisses do you give?
Iris: Nooooo! Wait…do I kiss the dogs?
